The 2026 World Cup Warm Up: Curaçao

The 2026 World Cup Warm Up: Curaçao

The smallest country ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, Curaçao, will be looking to show the world that they have the mettle to compete at the biggest stage. With a population of just over 150,000 and a land area of 171 square miles, the Blue Wave waltzed through the CONCACAF qualifying rounds to book their tickets for the biggest World Cup in history.

Coach Fred Rutten took charge in February, after Dick Advocaat stepped aside due to personal reasons. Under the Dutchman’s tutelage, Curaçao smashed 28 goals in their ten qualifying matches. Rutten will be hoping to continue from where Advocaat left off and impress in a group which includes Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

Curacao is a constituent country within the state of the Netherlands, and the national team is benefiting from a FIFA rule change that enables the selection of players who represented the Netherlands at youth levels, meaning that there are essentially two Dutch squads at the tournament.

Even though Curaçao may be the smallest nation among all 48 teams, they have plenty of talented players, including the likes of Rangelo Janga, who is his country’s leading goal-scorer. Leandro Bacuna, Livano Comenencia and Tahith Chong will all hope to make an impression when they line up in the national team’s colours this summer.

A versatile midfielder who can also play as a right-back, he played for Aston Villa, Reading, Cardiff, and Watford before representing Groningen and Bandırmaspor. Bacuna helped Curaçao win the Caribbean Cup in 2017 and the King’s Cup in 2019.

Remko Bicentini was Curaçao’s most legendary head coach; he laid the foundation and gave debuts to the players of the current generation. In 2024, the Blue Wave roped in Dick Advocaat, who had previously coached the Netherlands and the Republic.
The 78-year-old led the team to a rock-solid qualifying round before he had to leave the job in February due to personal reasons. His fellow countryman, Fred Rutten, took up the reins for his first international role. He has previously coached clubs in Netherlands, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Israel and Belgium.

Curaçao’s all-time leading goal-scorer, Rangelo Janga, has played in Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Cyprus and Kazakhstan. He also has double-digit scoring totals in CONCACAF competitions.

Chong gained limelight after progressing through Manchester United’s academy. He played five times for the club before joining Birmingham City and Luton Town. After representing Netherlands at youth level, Chong has played for Curaçao twice, bagging two goals as well.

His country’s joint most capped player, Eloy Room, has played his club football for Vitesse, PSV, Columbus Crew and Cercle Brugge. He was crucial in Curaçao’s final qualification game, putting in a shift to secure a 0-0 draw with Jamaica.

Younger brother of Leandro, Juninho, a central midfielder by trade, has amassed 45 caps for his country, scoring 13 goals along the way. He has represented Groningen, Huddersfield Town, Rangers, and Birmingham City in the past.

Qualification Path to World Cup 2026

Curaçao defeated Jamaica 2-1 in the 2017 Caribbean Cup final and qualified for the Concacaf Gold Cup for the first time. They beat the Reggae Boyz again in their last match of the qualifying round to secure a historic World Cup berth. It all began in 2014 when the Blue Wave came close to qualifying for the Brazil World Cup. They again came close in 2022 when they were eliminated by Panama 2-1 on aggregate.

Canada, Mexico and USA got direct tickets to the World Cup as hosts, and it was a fortunate push that Curaçao needed. They romped past the second round opponents before opening the third round with a 0-0 draw against Trinidad and Tobago. The Blue Wave downed Bermuda 3-2, before dispatching Jamaica 2-0 at home. Another 7-0 demolition of Bermuda was followed by a dramatic finale in Jamaica, where they etched their names in the history books.

Team Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: A large portion of the squad plays in top European leagues, bringing high-level experience, technical ability, and tactical discipline to the team. The team operates with a philosophy similar to the Netherlands, focusing on fluid, possession-based, and adaptable play, which is often unexpected in CONCACAF.

Weaknesses: Placed in Group B alongside teams like Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador, the fact that Curaçao will be tested against the world’s best would be their biggest challenge; it will be unlike any other teams they’ve played before. Matching the aforementioned teams in tactics and physicality will be a huge task for a team that has limited elite depth.
