Libertadores: Venezuelans clubs shine in Team of the Week Sofascore

Venezuelan clubs were the standout performers in the opening round of the 2026 Copa Libertadores group stage. La Guaira held Fluminense, the 2023 champions, to a 0-0 draw. Meanwhile, Universidad Central opened with a 3-1 win over Paraguay’s traditional side Libertad.
It was only natural, then, for the country to have some names in the Libertadores Team of the Week according to Sofascore ratings. Check out the best XI and further details on the selected players below.
Varela – La Guaira
The goalkeeper was decisive in securing the draw against Fluminense. With two outstanding saves, one in each half, he preserved the clean sheet and was the standout performer.

Fagner – Cruzeiro
The experienced full-back was key in the away win over Barcelona de Guayaquil. Solid defensively and active going forward, he stood out with strong all-around numbers.
Coates – Nacional
The Uruguayan center-back led the defense with authority. Dominant in the air and precise in his interventions, he also scored the equalizer from a set piece against Coquimbo Unido.
João Victor – Mirassol
The defender made club history by scoring Mirassol’s first-ever Libertadores goal. He also delivered a solid defensive display against Lanús, reigning Sudamericana and Recopa champions.
Renê – Fluminense
Very active on the left flank, he contributed both defensively and offensively. He remained consistent throughout the 90 minutes against La Guaira.
Paredes – Boca Juniors
On Boca’s return to Libertadores action, the midfielder showed experience and leadership. He scored one of the goals in a 2-1 away win over Universidad Católica and controlled the tempo in midfield.
Solé – Universidad Central
The Argentine midfielder stood out in the win over Libertad. Dynamic and creative, he played a key role between the lines.
Ibarra – Rosario Central
