Wembanyama drops 35 as Spurs take Game 1 vs Blazers

San Antonio Spurs opened their NBA Playoffs run with a 111-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center. The 2-seed Spurs led most of the night and now hold a 1-0 series lead in the Western Conference first round. Victor Wembanyama set the tone with 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting and 5-of-6 from three in front of 19,372 fans.
Shot-making and boards carry San Antonio
The Spurs won the shooting battle, finishing 40-of-84 from the field and 15-of-33 from deep. That 45% clip from three dwarfed Portland’s 10-of-38. San Antonio also controlled the glass 45-38, adding five blocks to limit second chances.
Wembanyama’s 35 came with ruthless efficiency, plus two blocks and a Sofascore Rating of 8.2. De’Aaron Fox chipped in 17 points and 8 assists with zero turnovers and a 7.8 Sofascore Rating. Devin Vassell hit four threes for 15 points, while Luke Kornet went 5-of-6 for 10 points off the bench.

Blazers’ bright spots, but cold from three
Deni Avdija kept Portland afloat with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists on 12-of-21 shooting. He posted an 8.3 Sofascore Rating, the best in the game. Scoot Henderson added 18 points on 7-of-11, and Jrue Holiday handed out 11 assists.
Portland moved the ball well for 28 team assists, yet the long-range shots never arrived. The Blazers finished at 26% from three and 42% overall, which could not offset San Antonio’s perimeter edge and rebounding margin. Robert Williams III offered a productive cameo with 11 points, 6 boards and 4 assists in 16 minutes.
Game flow: fast start, steady control
San Antonio jumped ahead 30-21 after the first quarter and led 59-49 at halftime. The third quarter pushed the gap to 87-72, and the Spurs spent 44:45 in front compared to Portland’s 1:40. The biggest lead hit 21.
Portland won the fourth 26-24, but the damage was done. San Antonio’s mix of hot shooting, timely rim protection and a 34-30 edge in defensive rebounds kept the visitors at arm’s length.
Series notes and what it means
The 2-seed Spurs draw first blood in this best-of-seven against the 7-seed Trail Blazers. Coaches Mitch Johnson and Tiago Splitter both leaned on their stars, and Game 1 showed where the margins may live: threes, boards and rim deterrence.
