The 2026 World Cup Warm Up: South Africa

South Africa is back among the best in the world. Sixteen years on from the carnival on their home soil. Their fans will be carrying the festive spirit and their vuvuzelas to the United States. South Africa have been paired alongside Mexico, Korea Republic, and one of Czechia/Denmark/North Macedonia/Republic of Ireland in Group A.
Coach Hugo Broos’ side will be playing in the inaugural fixture, a repeat of the 2010 match against Mexico, the latter being the co-hosts this time around. All eyes will be on Siyabonga Ngezana and Lyle Foster as the team nicknamed ‘Bafana Bafana’ will be gunning for a first knockout rounds berth.
Back in 2010, South Africa defeated 2006 runners-up France, and in their first appearance, they picked up their first win against Slovenia. The current team will be hoping to make the former legends proud and inspire the upcoming generations.
Best Player – Siyabonga Ngezana (Defender, Fotbal Club FCSB)
Siyabonga Ngezana has over 100 appearances for his club Kaizer Chiefs before joining the Romanian club FCSB. After representing the Bafana Bafana at junior levels, Ngezana has played over 11 times for the senior team, playing a key role in their qualification. The 28-year-old will be tasked with keeping the likes of Son Heung-Min and Raúl Jiménez quiet, and it should be a cracking battle between them.
- First World Cup: 1998 (Group Stage)
- Last World Cup: South Africa (Group Stage)
- World Cup appearances: 3 (1998, 2002, 2010)
- Current run of successive qualifications: 1
- As World Cup hosts: 2010 (Group Stage)

Head Coach
South Africa coach Hugo Broos took over the reins in May 2021 after the country narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. He worked on player development and gave youngsters such as Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa chances to shine on the international stage.
Fast forward two years, and Broos helped the Bafana Bafana to third place in the 2023 AFCON. They qualified for the 2026 World Cup with five wins in the qualification stage. The goal will be to become the first coach to take South Africa beyond the group stage.

Players to Follow
- Lyle Foster (Forward, Burnley)
Foster has top-flight experience in England and Belgium, highlighted by his Premier League appearances with Burnley. He has already scored 10 goals for the South African team in 24 appearances.
- Ronwen Williams (Goalkeeper, Mamelodi Sundowns)
Captain and the reigning African Goalkeeper of the Year, Williams has been a crucial figure between the posts, known for his penalty-saving ability and leadership.
- Mohau Nkota (Winger, Al-Ettifaq)
The 20-year-old winger made a seamless transition to the Saudi Pro League, scoring on his debut and earning praise for his confidence and technical skill.
- Shandre Campbell (Winger, Club Brugge)
Another 20-year-old winger, who made his Champions League debut for Club Brugge, offers long-term potential and high-level European exposure.
- Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Defender, Chicago Fire)
The young centre-back, despite criticism over his move to Chicago Fire, has shown maturity and composure at the AFCON and is being groomed as a future defensive leader.
Qualification Path to World Cup 2026
South Africa qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by topping CAF Group C. They secured direct qualification despite a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player earlier. South Africa finished with 18 points from 10 matches (5 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses), ahead of Nigeria on 17 points.
On October 14, 2025, South Africa beat Rwanda 3-0 at Mbombela Stadium, with goals from Thal Mbatha, Oswin Ollie, and Evidence Makgopa. This result clinched first place in Group C, despite the prior deduction. They clinched top spot after a 4-0 win for Nigeria against previous group leaders Benin.
Team Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: South Africa rely mainly on their defensive stability; they use a mid-block to deny space to opposition attackers. The presence of Siyabonga Ngezana and Nkosinathi Sibisi adds steel to the backline. They will try to use pacy wingers like Monnapule Saleng or Oswin Appollis to counterattack teams. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is one of the best in business.
Weaknesses: Lack of a reliable striker has often hurt the Bafana Bafana. Even in their recent AFCON appearance, the team crashed out in the round of 16 as they had the worst offensive record. To qualify for the knockouts, they must not only stop opposition from scoring, but also score themselves to win games, and that’s an aspect where they can certainly improve.

Facts / Trivia:
- South Africa became the first host nation to go out in the first round of the World Cup when eliminated in the group stage in 2010. Qatar became the second in 2022.
- South Africa is one of the few nations in the world that have multiple capitals (Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial).
- They hosted and won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (2-0 vs. Tunisia), their sole AFCON title.
- Benni McCarthy is South Africa’s leading goalscorer (31), while Aaron Mokoena has made the most appearances (107) for the country.
Conclusion
South Africa gave their fans a memorable result in 2010 when they upset France. The team certainly has a big challenge this summer as they look to make it out of the group stage. The Bafana Bafana will certainly bring plenty of entertainment and flavour to the United States, even if, realistically, the chances of their qualification to the knockouts remain slim.
