Wycombe miss chance to go top after being held by struggling Northampton
Wycombe missed the chance to take over at the top of League One after being held to 0-0 draw at home by relegation-threatened Northampton.
The second-placed Chairboys could have replaced Birmingham at the summit with a victory but are now two points behind the pacesetters having played two games more.
The opening half was a flat affair with both sides having limited chances at goal.
The visitors started the better of the two teams, as Franco Ravizzoli made a brilliant stop to deny a Tom Eaves header, while Sam Hoskins fired wide in the opening 25 minutes.
For the Chairboys, Cameron Humphreys was pulling the strings, as his through-balls found Brandon Hanlan and Beryly Lubala, but the opening goal remained elusive.
Luke Leahy went close on two occasions as he was denied by Nik Tzanev in the Cobblers’ goal, before his cross-shot went just wide moments later.
However, the best chance of the half fell to Wanderers’ Joe Low.
The centre-back, who returned to the starting line-up after missing the last two matches with tonsillitis, was brilliantly thwarted by Tzanev from point-blank range.
Seconds later, the Welshman’s header was easily caught by the New Zealand keeper.
The second period was similar to the first in that there were only a handful of chances, but Wycombe looked more likely to score.
Tzanev made himself big to deny Josh Scowen in the final quarter, while Fred Onyedinma’s header was again saved by the keeper.
Richard Kone’s introduction with 20 minutes remaining added urgency which Wanderers were lacking, but interim boss Sam Grace will look at this as two points dropped against a side 20th in the table.
