Will Grigg scored the vital goal as Chesterfield beat Accrington 1-0 to snatch the final play-off spot in League Two.
The Spireites were ninth at the start of the day and were relying on Salford and Grimsby not winning and for themselves to get at least a point at the Wham Stadium.
It worked out perfectly for them to secure seventh spot but it was almost snatched out of their hands in added time as Stanley hit the woodwork twice.
Paul Cook’s side forced the pace and the only goal came after 32 minutes when Jenson Metcalfe’s strike was pushed out by Michael Kelly but only to Ryan Colclough who hit the post and Grigg was there to fire into the empty net. It was his 14th goal of the season.
Grigg looked for more, denied by the foot of Kelly at the start of the second half, and the Spireites pressed with Colclough and Tom Naylor firing over.
Dylan Duffy rattled the crossbar for Chesterfield after 87 minutes but Stanley still pressed and Josh Woods and Anjola Popoola both hit the woodwork for Stanley in the fourth minute of added time.
Chesterfield held on in dramatic fashion and will now face Walsall in the play-offs.
