Things are hotting up across Europe, with Spain and Italy in particular playing host to extremely tight title races and France and Germany staging battles throughout their tables.

There is plenty to play for in every division too, with European places up for grabs and numerous sides in all of the top five leagues battling against relegation.

Sunday looks set to be another feast of fantastic European football and we have picked out five teams worth backing on the bumper coupon.

Sunday, 1pm

Since their shock win over Atletico Madrid, Leganes have gone five LaLiga matches without a win and find themselves sitting just one point above the relegation zone ahead of this round of fixtures.

They will see a visit from one of the only two sides to have netted less than their 23 goals, Getafe (22), as an opportunity to pick up some vital points, but it is the away side who appeal most.

Jose Bordalas’ infamous, robust tactics mean away games where they can sit in and absorb pressure suit Getafe.

They have won six of their last seven road matches in all competitions and they can grind out another victory at struggling Leganes.

Sunday, 2pm

Empoli shocked the whole of Italy when beating Juventus on penalties to reach the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on Wednesday, but they should come crashing back down to earth at Genoa.

Roberto D'Aversa’s side have netted just eight goals while winning none of their last 11 Serie A matches, suggesting that they will struggle at Genoa, who have won to nil in each of their last three home games.

Roberto D'Aversa's Empoli are without a victory in their last 11 games in Serie A.

Sunday, 4.15pm

Montpellier looked to have turned a corner when beating Monaco and Toulouse at the end of January, but it seems they only gave their fans false hope of their side mounting a survival bid.

La Paillade remain rooted to the bottom of Ligue 1, losing their subsequent four matches by an aggregate score of 10-1 and they are unlikely to earn any points when Rennes come to town, given the visitors have won three of their last four games without conceding.

Sunday, 4.30pm

Confidence will be high at Augsburg after extending their Bundesliga unbeaten run to seven with a 3-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend and they come into Sunday’s clash with high-flying Freiburg as favourites.

However, Freiburg are arguably the most in-form side in the German top-flight, winning their last four matches to nil.

Given Freiburg are sitting fourth heading into the weekend, won the reverse fixture 3-1 and thrashed Werder Bremen 5-0 last time out, it could pay to back them at a generous price.

Sunday, 7.45pm

The day’s biggest game comes at the San Siro, where an out-of-form AC Milan host a Lazio side with their sights set on a top-four finish.

The visitors are just two points behind fourth-placed Juventus ahead of the weekend’s action, but they are unlikely to close that gap in Milan, where the Rossoneri have been formidable of late.

While their overall form has been patchy to say the least, Milan have gone 13 matches without a defeat at home, suggesting that they may have enough to see off Lazio, who have lost five away matches against AC on the spin – the last four without scoring a goal.
