Trent Alexander-Arnold hailed Liverpool's character after the Reds rescued a precious point at Manchester City.

Erling Haaland put the champions ahead at the Etihad before the break with his 50th Premier League goal as Pep Guardiola's men controlled the early stages.

But Jurgen Klopp's visitors lifted things after the break and earned a share of the spoils when Alexander-Arnold's low drive rifled into the bottom corner.

The England ace, 25, admitted his side's performance was far from perfect but was keen to take the positives given the scoreline.

Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports: "It's definitely better than we did last year. We haven’t had too many good results here in general. It’s a point gained.

"It wasn’t an amazing performance from us at all, but we take the point. There were positives — we had chances to win the game.

"I don't think we played particularly well. Their formation and the way they set up really challenged us.

"But we regrouped at half-time and came out with a bit more of a game plan to press them.

"It’s difficult subconsciously when you play against Man City because you can’t really get tight to them and you end up standing off them."

Deployed in his more traditional role roaming free on the right flank, Liverpool's No66 had the unenviable task of containing the lively Jeremy Doku.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold also felt he was the victim of some special treatment when venturing forward.

He added: "There was potentially a game plan to stop me from getting the ball in midfield, a bit of man-marking.

"I think Bernardo [Silva] was very close to me when I was pulling inside. I may have got that completely wrong but that's how it felt.

"So it was about getting on the ball in different ways and getting us up the pitch. We did that especially well in the second half.

"There’s been many times when we've played a lot better against City and lost the game.

"The point was something that we needed and instils that belief that even if we don't play well, if you get a point it means you're doing something right."
