- Portugal have lost all of their last three competitive games by at least three goals
- Spain have won eight of their last nine matches
- Recommended bet:
Spain -2 on handicap

Spain have arrived at the Women's European Championship as the top-ranked team in the tournament and they will have expectations of getting off to a strong start against Portugal, who are among the less fancied teams.

Qualification was a breeze for the 2023 World Cup winners, who topped Group A2 with five wins from six matches, scoring 18 goals in the process.

And La Roja have maintained a high standard in this year’s Nations League Group A3, finishing top of the section with five more points than second-placed England.

Portugal had a more complicated qualification path because they were stationed in League B of the 2023-24 Nations League.

They finished top of Group B3 and followed with play-off successes over Azerbaijan and Czech Republic, who were bested by aggregate scores of 8-1 and 3-2.

Team news

Spain were unable to select Arsenal defender Laia Codina and Real Madrid midfielder Teresa Abelleira due to injuries.

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati is in the squad but is unlikely to feature in the first game having recently been discharged from hospital after a bout of viral meningitis.

Portugal are without the services of veteran Racing Power forward Carolina Mendes, who misses the tournament through injury.

Barcelona attacker Kika Nazareth has been selected but has not played any football since March due an ankle injury. The 22-year-old seems set for a place among the substitutes.

The stats

Spain have scored at least two goals in eight of their last nine fixtures.

La Roja have lost only one of their last 11 games.

Spain have won seven of their last eight games while conceding at least one goal on each occasion.

Portugal have failed to score in each of their last three matches.

All of Portugal’s last four competitive games have generated at least three goals.

Prediction

Spain are rightly considered to be among the main contenders at Euro 2025 and they can send out an early message to rival teams by posting a high-scoring victory over Iberian neighbours Portugal.

The teams faced each other in this year’s Nations League Group A3 with Spain winning 4-2 on Portuguese territory and 7-1 in the return fixture in Vigo.

Portugal will have been trying to work out a way of being more competitive, but they face a really tough challenge against a side full of confidence and packed with quality.

Spain are approaching the game on a five-match winning sequence and they can extend that run with a dominant performance and result.
