Vitor Pereira is slowly edging Wolves closer to Premier League safety

- Southampton's loss to Liverpool last weekend leaves them bottom
- Wolves are six points clear of the relegation zone in 17th place
- Recommended Bet:
Wolves to win and both teams to score

Wolves will be hoping to take a big step to Premier League survival when they travel to Championship-bound Southampton on Saturday.

Southampton’s defeat to Liverpool last time out sees them stuck on just nine points from 28 games, with the Saints in danger of recording the lowest ever points tally in a Premier League season.

Wolves’ 1-1 draw with Everton means that they have taken seven points from the last 15 on offer, at a time when the three teams below them are all struggling to claim positive results.

Team news

Jan Bednarek suffered a concussion in Southampton’s defeat at Liverpool, but is expected to return against Wolves.

James Bree is definitely out for the Saints, while Juan Larios, Ryan Fraser and Ross Stewart are all lacking fitness after spells on the sidelines.

Matheus Cunha is suspended for Wolves, while Yerson Mosquera, Enso Gonzalez, Leon Chiwome and Sasa Kalajdzic are all injured.

Southampton have lost their last five matches in all competitions, a run that began with a 1-0 home defeat by Championship club Burnley in the FA Cup.

The Saints have nine points this season, two less than the Derby side that recorded the lowest ever points total in the Premier League with 11 in the 2007-08 season.

Wolves won their last away game in the Premier League, beating Bournemouth 1-0 in February.

Vitor Pereira’s side have conceded in 12 of their 14 away games in the top flight.

Prediction

This trip to the Premier League’s bottom club is a real opportunity for Wolves to take a step towards safety, on a weekend when both Leicester and Ipswich have difficult away games that they are expected to lose.

While they have yet to achieve any consistency under Pereira, aside from a short burst of results when he was first appointed, the Midlands club are still picking up the odd result.

The 1-1 home draw with Everton may have been viewed as a disappointment under different circumstances, had it not been on a weekend when the bottom three clubs in the Premier League all lost.

One suspects that Wolves would be further still from the relegation zone if it were not for the ill-discipline of their forward Cunha, yet even without him they look capable of winning this weekend.

Though Southampton are adrift from the rest on just nine points, their performance at Liverpool shows that they are still fighting and they could get on the scoresheet in defeat.
