Southampton vs Newcastle predictions: Magpies can enjoy a goalfest
- Southampton have won just once in the Premier League this season
- Newcastle won six straight league games before losing to Bournemouth
- Recommended bet: Over 2.5 Newcastle goals
Southampton are at risk of being one of the worst teams in Premier League history and their seemingly impossible fight against relegation is unlikely to be improved by a visit from Newcastle.
The Magpies will be keen to get last week’s 4-1 home loss to Bournemouth out of their system.
Team news
The struggling Saints will once again have to do without the services of Tyler Dibling, Ross Stewart and Jack Stephens.
The game looks to have come too early for Newcastle forward Callum Wilson, while Jamaal Lascelles and Nick Pope (both knee) remain in the treatment room alongside thigh injury sufferer Harvey Barnes.
The stats
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has scored 11 goals in his last nine Premier League appearances.
The Magpies have tasted victory in their last three away matches in the league.
Southampton have conceded a total of 19 goals in their last five home league games.
The Saints have scored just seven league goals at St Mary’s this term.
Newcastle have failed to score in just one of their 11 road games this season.
Prediction
The joy at regaining their Premier League status at the first attempt by winning the Championship play-off final in May has turned into a nightmare for Southampton, whose fans will be desperate for the season to end.
The Saints have won just once in the league all season and have gained only two points from their last 12 matches, so they are threatening the lowest tallies that the top-flight has witnessed in the Premier League era.
There appears to be little chance of a respite this week when they entertain Newcastle, who have not only shown their potential top-four pedigree in the last few weeks, but will also be desperate to bounce back from a surprise 4-1 loss at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Saints were hardly able to lay a glove on the Magpies on the opening weekend of the season, even though their hosts played most of the game with 10 men and this week’s clash could see them suffer a much greater defeat than the 1-0 they endured at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe’s side had won six straight league games before their reverse against the Cherries and they will also be confident of seeing off Southampton after 4-0 wins over promoted Leicester and Ipswich last month.
The visitors boast one of the league’s top strikers in Alexander Isak, who has 15 goals to his name this season and he should be licking his lips at the prospect of facing a team who look out of their depth, so expect the Magpies to score more than two goals.
