Sophie Roman Haug opened the scoring and hit a second-half equaliser as Liverpool drew 2-2 with Tottenham.

The hosts struck early through Roman Haug’s cool finish, only for Spurs to turn the match on its head through a Rachael Laws own goal and Clare Hunt’s close-range effort from a corner in the space of six first-half minutes.

But Roman Haug levelled six minutes into the second period, before both sides almost nicked it in stoppage time with Liverpool denied by goalkeeper Lize Kop from a flurry of chances and Martha Thomas close to grabbing a winner at the other end.

A draw left the Reds fifth in the table while Spurs’ winless run in the Women’s Super League extended to eight games.

Tottenham went close in the early stages when Beth England managed to weave through the defence before unleashing a powerful strike, but Laws pushed the ball behind.

Liverpool then struck in the 12th minute when the visitors were unable to clear a corner and, following a scramble in the box, the loose ball trickled into the path of Roman Haug, who calmly slotted a low shot past Kop.

Although Liverpool then enjoyed a comfortable spell of possession, Tottenham equalised in bizarre circumstances in the 25th minute when Jess Naz’s cross was nodded onto the bar by Grace Fisk and, while Laws attempted to make the save, the ball bounced off her and spilled over the line.

Spurs continued to pile on the pressure, and took the lead in the 31st minute when an inswinging corner was poked home at the back post by Hunt.

Jenna Clark had a long-range strike whistle narrowly over the crossbar as Liverpool looked to get back on level terms before the break and Kop made two great saves to stop Ceri Holland’s effort before palming Clark’s cross away.

Laws made a comfortable save from Naz’s curling shot early in the second half, but an energetic opening saw Liverpool soon equalise from a short corner in the 51st minute when Marie Hobinger picked out Roman Haug out at the back post to nod past Kop.

The Tottenham goalkeeper then made a save from Holland’s looping cross and pushed away Cornelia Kapocs’ low strike from distance before Naz went close at the other end, chipping the ball just over the bar.

The game became a stop-start encounter with some delays due to injury, but Liverpool had a good opportunity in the 82nd minute when Gemma Bonner nodded over and Rosella Ayane’s scuffed attempt for Spurs was scooped up by Laws.

With 10 minutes of stoppage time, Kop produced a great punch to clear Hobinger’s curling corner before Fisk headed wide moments later.

The Spurs goalkeeper made another vital intervention to deny Clark at the back post before Thomas had a chance to win it at the death, but her header flashed wide of the upright.
