Ukraine to win

Ukraine have a brilliant chance to start Euro 2024 off with a win in Monday’s meeting with Romania.

The Blue and Yellow reached the quarter-finals at the last European Championship and a kind draw has set up Serhiy Rebrov’s side for another good run.

Ukraine have an impressive side featuring some big Premier League names, alongside La Liga’s top goalscorer and the goalkeeper who helped Real Madrid to the Spanish title.

Romania’s key defender Radu Dragusin is expected to start, despite his limited game time with Tottenham following his January move.

Ukraine will hand a late fitness test to Everton defender Vitalii Mykolenko ahead of this game.

Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko will move into midfield, with Girona pair Viktor Tsyhankov and Artem Dovbyk joined by Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk.

The stats

Ukraine conceded only eight goals in eight qualifying games.

Romania have drawn a blank in consecutive clashes with Bulgaria and Liechtenstein.

Tricolorii have won once across their last 16 European Championship games, losing 10 times.

Ukraine have lost only one competitive clash since Rebrov too charge.

The Blue and Yellow have won three of five games in 2024, including play-off encounters with Iceland and Bosnia.

Prediction

Ukraine head to Euro 2024 looking like a team capable of making a deep run.

After reaching the last eight three years ago, hopes are high for a side that has brought through some exciting young talents since.

Ukraine have a number of players to watch out for this summer, with Tsyhankov and Dovbyk hoping to take their Girona form onto the international stage.

Rebrov took charge of the team last year and he did well to push European Champions Italy all the way in qualifying.

Ukraine missed out on a top-two finish on goal difference alone, while they beat Bosnia and Iceland to make it to the finals.

The Blue and Yellow head into this tournament having won five of their last eight games and Rebrov has won seven of his first 13 games.

With the team continuing to gel, there is value here against a Romania side who look set to disappoint.

Romania may have topped their qualifying group but their performances were not spectacular, while their opposition in the Swiss were vulnerable.

Rebrov has his choice of two fantastic goalkeepers, while in Mudryk they have a winger who performs better for his national side. He did have a bright finish to the campaign with Chelsea too, so this Ukraine side has a lot of potential.
