Reece Cole’s second-half equaliser earned Exeter a 1-1 draw in their League One clash with Wigan at St James Park.
The Grecians had the first effort at goal in the 13th minute but Joel Colwill was high and wide after being teed up by Josh Magennis.
Wigan responded with some good individual play by Maleace Asamoah, who won the ball out wide and cut infield but fired straight down the throat of Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth.
It was a game of few chances, but Cole drew a smart save from Sam Tickle with a shot from distance and from the resulting corner, Cole was over the crossbar with another Exeter chance.
Wigan were awarded a penalty after 51 minutes when Asamoah was deemed to have been upended by Angus MacDonald and Dale Taylor sent Whitworth the wrong way from 12 yards.
Whitworth showed brilliant reactions to deny Asamoah a second for Wigan, but Exeter equalised in the 69th minute when a long throw was headed as far as Cole and his volley bounced into the turf and into the far corner from 18 yards.
Asamoah had a glorious chance to win it late on for Wigan but he rushed his shot and lobbed the ball wide of Whitworth.
