RB Leipzig won 2-0 at Holstein Kiel on Saturday and are faring well in fourth position in the Bundesliga, but their Champions League campaign has been disastrous, with them having been handed an unkind set of fixtures.

That run continues against an Aston Villa side who are hovering just outside the top eight and who have won successive Premier League games following their 1-0 home victory against Southampton over the weekend.

Team news

RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba is suspended, while David Raum, El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Elif Elmas and Yussef Poulsen are all out with injuries.

Leon Bailey suffered a hamstring injury in Villa’s victory against Southampton and will miss this game.

Jacob Ramsey is another Villans player who is out due to a hamstring problem, but otherwise Unai Emery has a full squad to choose from.

Marco Rose's RB Leipzig have been unlucky not to pick up a single Champions League point.

The stats

RB Leipzig have lost all five of their Champions League ties, conceding an average of two goals per game.

Aston Villa have only conceded once in the Champions League this season, with only Inter Milan having a better defensive record.

Marco Rose’s Leipzig side have won their last two domestic games, ending a six-match run without a victory across all competitions.

Villa have also won their last two matches, which halted an eight-game spell without a win.

Prediction

RB Leipzig are proof that the new Champions League format can be cruel, with their five fixtures having seen them face European giants such as Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool and Inter.

They lost all four of those games and also tasted defeat in a 3-1 reverse away at Celtic, so the Germans face a huge uphill battle to make the play-off positions, with matches against Sporting Lisbon and Sturm Graz still to come.

The Red Bull Arena has not proved to be a fortress in recent weeks, with Leipzig losing to both Juventus and Liverpool at home and being thrashed 5-1 by Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Villa’s form has been far from convincing of late, with Emery’s squad stretched by the demands of their Champions League adventure, yet their results in the competition have remained impressive.

Only Club Brugge have inflicted defeat on the Midlanders in a 1-0 loss in which Villa gifted the Belgians a penalty and their defensive record suggests that it makes sense to cautiously back an away win.
