Both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool look to have their domestic titles in the bag and no quarter is likely to be given when they clash in the Champions League in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday.

PSG have grown into this year’s competition after taking just one point from their opening three games, and an entertaining clash should be dished up against the Reds, who have won seven of their eight Champions League games this term.

Team news

Luis Enrique’s side should be at full strength as no fresh injury issues were reported following their 4-1 win over Lille on Saturday.

Arne Slot should also have all his big guns available as only Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are set to be missing from the squad. Both have hamstring injuries.

The stats

Arne Slot's Liverpool can fully focus on the Champions League, having gone 13 points clear in the Premier League

PSG have gone out of the Champions League at this stage in five of the last eight seasons.

The French champions have won their last 10 matches.

Liverpool have won seven of their eight Champions League games this season.

Nine of PSG’s last 14 games have featured at least four goals.

Liverpool have scored at least twice in nine of their last 12 away matches.

PSG have kept only two clean sheets in their last nine home games.

Prediction

A strong Champions League run has become the priority for both Paris Saint-germain and Liverpool as they sit comfortably on top of their domestic leagues and that should ensure we are treated to an entertaining spectacle when they meet in the French capital on Wednesday.

Gaining a first-leg advantage in their last-16 tie will be key and PSG can be expected to go on the front foot as they look to extend their winning run to 11 matches.

Luis Enrique’s side suffered a jittery start in the competition when they took just a point from their first three games against PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, but they steamrolled Ligue 1 rivals Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs and could be coming to the boil.

Liverpool’s only defeat in their eight games in this year’s competition came in a dead rubber against PSV when manager Arne Slot fielded a team packed with fringe players and they have been free-scoring on the road both domestically and on the continent.

The fact the Reds — who should be fresh after having the weekend off — have won just three of their last nine away games will encourage PSG to push forward and it would not be a surprise if the best teams in France and England serve up a real treat with plenty of goals.
