Milutin Osmajic bagged a brace as Preston beat Charlton 2-1 in the FA Cup to seal a fourth-round tie with Wycombe.

The Montenegro striker scored in the 32nd and 47th minute with Luke Berry temporarily levelling the scores with a 40th-minute strike.

Charlton wingers Tyreece Campbell and Thierry Small both forced early saves out of Freddie Woodman, either side of a header that went narrowly wide from North End debutant Lewis Gibson, as the visitors started the game strongly.

But disaster struck for Nathan Jones’ men as Alex Mitchell sold Will Mannion short with a back-pass and the goalkeeper’s clearance ricocheted off Osmajic, who gleefully rolled into an empty net at the second attempt.

However, the League One team were soon level as 20-year-old Small stormed down the line before rolling the ball across the box for Berry’s first-time finish.

The Addicks’ confidence was up and, just a minute later, Josh Edwards forced Woodman to tip the ball over with an effort from the edge of the box before providing the cross for Gassan Ahadme’s point-blank header that was blocked in a melee.

Preston had been second-best in the opening period but took the lead within two minutes of the restart as Osmajic beat Mannion at his near post with a well-timed volley from Ben Whiteman’s corner.

Charlton captain Greg Docherty could have equalised within a minute but headed over from close range and then, on the immediate counter to that chance, Osmajic slammed into the side-netting after being released by Mads Frokjaer.

Paul Heckingbottom brought Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Sam Greenwood and Ali McCann off the bench to help see the game out but Woodman had to pull off a stunning 85th-minute stop to claw substitute Chuks Aneke’s header out after another great Small delivery.
