Charlton strengthened their grip on a Sky Bet League One play-off place as Macauley Gillesphey’s winner sealed a 1-0 victory over Barnsley which moves them up to fifth in the table.

The Addicks made the decisive breakthrough in the 12th minute when defender Gillesphey scored for the second successive match to take his goal tally for the season to four.

Tyreece Campbell was fouled on the edge of the box, with the centre-back’s free-kick going underneath a jumping Barnsley wall and squeezing past goalkeeper Jackson Smith.

Davis Keillor-Dunn had a big chance to level soon after but – after wriggling free in the penalty box – the Tykes attacker’s attempt was kept out by the legs of Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion.

The game was largely devoid of clear chances until the closing stages.

Smith dived full stretch to turn Charlton midfielder Conor Coventry’s 77th-minute shot around his right post.

Luca Connell drilled an attempt narrowly wide as Barnsley struggled to break down the hosts.

Smith made another big save in the 85th minute to deny Addicks substitute Miles Leaburn, who had been threaded through on the left of the box by Campbell.
