Liverpool to win 2-0

Liverpool fell short in their enthralling Champions League tussle with Paris Saint-Germain, losing 4-1 on penalties, but they have the chance to bounce back in a massive game when taking on Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds were understandably disappointed after the end of their European adventure which marked a rare low point in their campaign.

However, they remain on course for two domestic trophies and are firm favourites to fulfil the first part against Newcastle, who have not lifted a major trophy since their Fairs Cup triumph in 1969.

Newcastle are contesting the League Cup final for the second time in three years and will be hoping for a better performance and outcome than 2023 when they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United.

Team news

Liverpool went the full distance without any reward against PSG and picked up a couple of further injuries, while defenders Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley (both thigh) are set to miss out.

Eddie Howe has limited options in the back line with left-back Lewis Hall (ankle) and central defenders Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles (both knee) out of contention.

Anthony Gordon is suspended, with Harvey Barnes expected to continue in his fellow Englishman’s absence.

The stats

Liverpool have won seven of their last eight matches against Newcastle and the Reds have won three of their last five fixtures without conceding any goals.

Mohamed Salah blanked in both legs against PSG, but he has scored in nine of his last 12 appearances.

Newcastle have scored in 20 of their last 22 fixtures, but have conceded the first goal in four of their last six matches.

Prediction

Liverpool were edged aside by a high class opponent in their Champions League last-16 tie against PSG, but they are the outstanding team in the Premier League and can show their class by registering a 2-0 victory over Newcastle.

The Reds have been successful on each of their last five visits to Wembley, including last season’s League Cup final against Chelsea when Virgil van Dijk’s header secured a 1-0 extra-time success.

Beating the Blues ensured one last moment of glory at the end of the Jurgen Klopp era, but the Merseysiders have looked even more assured in their opening season under Arne Slot and seem almost certain to land a first Premier League title since 2019-20.

Newcastle have had a solid league campaign and remain in the thick of the race for Champions League qualification thanks to Monday’s hard-fought 1-0 win away to West Ham.

However, they have lost five successive Wembley finals and are set for further heartbreak under the famous arch.
