Josh Neufville’s sublime strike helped promotion-chasing AFC Wimbledon to a 2-0 League Two win over relegation-threatened Tranmere.

Luke McGee produced a phenomenal save to prevent Joe Pigott’s volley from finding the bottom-right corner during an entertaining start at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Matty Stevens was picked out in the box by a superb Jake Reeves free-kick from deep in the 19th minute, but his close-range header sailed over the crossbar.

Kristian Dennis got on the end of a cross four minutes later. His initial attempt forced an excellent stop from Dons goalkeeper Owen Goodman, but the Rovers forward should have done better with the follow-up, which he blasted into the side netting.

The hosts took the lead early in the second half as Neufville curled a stunning left-footed effort from the edge of the box into the top-left corner.

Down the other end, Harvey Saunders dragged his half-volley just wide of the post before Neufville made a crucial block to stop Zak Bradshaw’s goal-bound header.

However, Stevens wrapped up the win with a cooly-converted penalty in the 80th minute after Tom Davies handled Josh Kelly’s cross.

To make matters worse for the visitors, Declan Drysdale was shown a red card in the 87th minute for a second bookable offence.
