Stockport are almost certain of a place in the Sky Bet League One play-offs after Jack Diamond’s stoppage-time goal earned them a 1-1 draw at Peterborough.
Ricky-Jade Jones’ opener looked set to earn the Vertu Trophy winners victory at the Weston Homes Stadium, but the Hatters’ late leveller left them nine points clear of seventh-placed Reading with a vastly superior goal difference.
After a serious-looking early injury to Peterborough midfielder Archie Collins, Stockport’s Kyle Wootton stretched to meet Ollie Norwood’s free-kick but could not direct his effort on target.
The Posh then took the lead with a breakaway goal in the 43rd minute when Jones beat Ethan Pye to the ball on the halfway line to go clean through and finish confidently.
Stockport began the second half brighter, with Norwood having a shot saved by Peterborough goalkeeper Jed Steer before the midfielder bent a free-kick over.
It took the Hatters until the first minute of added time to rescue themselves, however, as Diamond arrowed a superb drive into the bottom corner from just outside the area.
