West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca has revealed it would be his "dream" to work under Jose Mourinho at Roma.

Scamacca failed to make an impact in his debut season for the Hammers, netting only three goals in 16 Premier League outings last term.

The Italian hitman arrived from Sassuolo in a £35.5million deal last summer but an injury-hit campaign meant he missed the final five matches of the Irons’ run to Europa Conference League glory.

And the 11-cap international admits that a return to his homeland would be tempting.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "Rome is home to me.

"Francesco Totti has been my idol since I was a kid and which player wouldn't dream of being coached by Mourinho?

"I am convinced he would motivate me and I would improve even more.

"I've always made decisions with my heart and will continue to do so.

"You know the colours of my heart, but right now I am a West Ham player and happy here."

Scamacca scored in his last outing in West Ham colours, finding the net in a 4-0 victory over AEK Larnaca in March.

But after struggling to find form for the Azzurri in Euro 2024 qualifiers later that month, he underwent knee surgery which brought a premature end to his campaign.

On his time at the London Stadium to date, he reflected: "If I return to Serie A, it is not because I've failed in England.

"It wouldn't be a step back.

"[Saudi] Arabia is becoming a power but now I must remain in Europe and try to write a piece of history.

"Perhaps people don't know it but I played all season with a broken meniscus. At some point, it was impossible to continue and I underwent surgery.

"I scored eight goals in 37 games until March. It could have been better.

"I will reach peak fitness by the start of the season. If I am fit, and I am convinced I will be, I will score 20 goals."
