Serie A season preview: Champions could be hard to catch

Antonio Conte's Napoli are expected to put in a strong defence of their Serie A title
Antonio Conte's Napoli are expected to put in a strong defence of their Serie A title

Inter Milan were strong favourites to retain their Serie A title in the 2024-25 season, but they were pipped to the crown by Napoli, finishing just one point behind Antonio Conte’s side.

There were reports suggesting that Conte could leave in the summer but he has remained with Gli Azzurri for now and it is hard to see anybody catching them, especially with Inter failing to impress at the Club World Cup under Cristian Chivu.

Roma, Juventus and AC Milan will also be in the hunt for the title but Napoli are the favourites for a reason.

Title to stay in Naples

As is usually the case with a Conte side, Napoli’s defence was key to their success. They conceded just 27 goals en route to the title and they have looked to improve their attacking output to maintain their status as champions, after netting 20 fewer than Inter.

Surprise package Scott McTominay came up with numerous crucial goals during Gli Azzurri’s sensational run to the title and he will have a new midfield partner this season, superstar playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

That addition, along with exciting winger Noa Lang, only makes the strongest side in Italy stronger and they are also the most settled of the title contenders, meaning an odds-against price is certainly worth taking.

Roma ready to keep improving

No Serie A side has picked up more points in 2025 than Roma’s 49, eight more than next-best Napoli and Inter.

The capital club won 15 of their final 20 matches of last season and while the man who led them during that sensational run, Claudio Ranieri, has departed, his replacement is another experienced manager who could bring out even further improvement, Gian Piero Gasperini.

The Italian’s Atalanta sides often overachieved and it could be much of the same with Roma.

A quiet window means he has a settled squad to work with and they are a lot easier to trust than Juventus and AC Milan when it comes to those hunting for a top-four spot.

Deadly Dovbyk a big price for top scorer honours

One thing synonymous with Gasperini is goals. Atalanta never scored fewer than 57 Serie A goals in a season under his stewardship, hitting over 90 twice in his nine-year tenure, and his strikers must have loved playing for him.

Last season’s Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui was the latest beneficiary of Gasperini’s gung-ho tactics, with the Italian bagging 25 goals, and Artem Dovbyk could be the next.

The Ukrainian scored a respectable 12 goals in his debut Serie A season last term but netted 24 in LaLiga in 2023-24 to be the top scorer and should get even more chances under Gasperini.
