Russell Martin takes Rangers to the Czech Republic to face Plzen again on Tuesday

After a poor 2024-25 season in which they finished 15 points behind Celtic, Rangers begin their attempts to regain the Scottish Premiership title when they head to Motherwell on Saturday.

New Gers boss Russell Martin has already enjoyed success, guiding his team past Panathinaikos in the second round of Champions League qualifying and they host Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday.

First up is a trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell, who, after finishing eighth last season, have a new head coach in Jens Berthel Askou.

The Dane has overseen a strong Scottish League Cup campaign and his side can run the visitors close in North Lanarkshire.

Team news

Tawanda Maswanhise could start after scoring four times in three starts during Well's Scottish League Cup campaign.

He is expected to start as one of three attacking midfielders behind striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos.

For Rangers, new signing Djeidi Gassama has scored twice in as many appearances since signing from Sheffield Wednesday and should get the nod in attack alongside outstanding teenager Findlay Christie and striker Danilo.

The stats

Martin is unbeaten after two competitive games in charge of Rangers, beating Panathinaikos at home and drawing away.

Motherwell were victorious in all four of their Scottish League Cup games, beating Clyde on penalties before recording wins over Peterhead, Stenhousemuir and Morton in 90 minutes to top Group G.

The pair met four times in 2024-25 – Rangers won 2-1 at Fir Park in August before a 2-2 draw at the same venue in December and then a 2-1 win for the Steelmen at Ibrox in March.

The other match was November's 2-1 victory for the Gers in the Scottish League Cup and they have not lost at Motherwell since May 2015.

Rangers have won their first league match under a new manager on seven of the last eight occasions.

Prediction

After beating Panathinaikos 3-0 at home, Rangers looked in control in their 1-1 second leg draw in Athens, but while Champions League progress is a bonus, it feels like pushing Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title is the priority.

Bizarrely, they have failed to win or score in their last two opening league fixtures, but will fancy themselves to break that duck against a Well side already playing well under Berthel Askou.

The Steelmen averaged two goals a game in topping Group G of the Scottish League Cup, but conceded twice against League Two Clyde.

That was their opening fixture and they have sharpened up since, but Rangers but should have enough to edge an entertaining game.
