Newcastle go in search of their first victory of the season when they make the trip to Elland Road on Saturday to face Leeds in the Premier League.

The Magpies were denied a comeback point in Monday's loss to Liverpool, coming from 2-0 down despite being reduced to 10 men only for Rio Ngumoha to grab a last-gasp winner for the Reds.

Newcastle have been hit with one suspension and three injuries from that contest and they now head to Yorkshire to take on a Leeds side reeling from Tuesday's League Cup penalty shootout defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Team news

Leeds are without both Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu due to injury, but they are the only two players currently in the treatment room.

Midfielder Sean Longstaff, who left St James' Park this summer to join the Whites, could start against his former club.

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon begins his three-match ban for the red card picked up against Liverpool, with his spot through the middle expected to go to Will Osula.

Fabian Schar has been ruled out through concussion, putting Malick Thiaw in line for his full debut, while Joelinton and Sandro Tonali are expected to miss out with groin and shoulder injuries respectively.

Jacob Ramsey could also be set for his full debut and fellow midfielder Lewis Miley is likely to be brought in, while left-back Lewis Hall is pushing for a start. Wantaway striker Alexander Isak remains unavailable.

The stats

Leeds have collected three points from their first two league games, beating Everton 1-0 at home before being thumped 5-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Whites are on a four-game winning streak at Elland Road, scoring 13 times and conceding just once during this period.

Newcastle are unbeaten in the last four meetings against Leeds, although three of those have ended in draws.

The Magpies have won their last eight Premier League games against promoted sides, netting at least three goals in seven of those victories.

Prediction

Newcastle's options in the attacking third were already thin on the ground with Isak continuing to push for a move away, but the suspension of Gordon has now further depleted Eddie Howe's resources.

Denmark Under-21 international Osula did come off the bench to score on Monday and he is expected to be given the nod up top for the Magpies, flanked by Anthony Elanga and one of Harvey Barnes or Jacob Murphy.

But the likely absence of both Joelinton and Tonali in midfield reduces the muscle and craft in Newcastle's team and chances could be few and far between at Elland Road.

Leeds will see this as a great chance to pick up the win, but they were outclassed by Arsenal before then being dumped out of the League Cup by a struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

Given three of the last four meetings between these two clubs have ended in draws and the lack of firepower in both sides, a share of the spoils could be on the cards.
