  • Preston have fallen to just one Championship defeat this season

  • Charlton have conceded just six league goals in an encouraging start

  • Recommended bet: Draw

Preston were embroiled in the Championship relegation scrap last season, but this term has been a lot more encouraging so far and they will be looking to boost their standing by beating new boys Charlton at Deepdale on Saturday.

However, the Addicks have settled into second-tier life well and will be confident they can get something from their trip north.

Team news

Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom could keep faith with the team that claimed a 2-2 draw at Hull on Tuesday, with Thierry Small set to face the club he left in the summer.

The game will come too early for Brad Potts, who is fighting his way back to fitness after a long-term injury.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones could also elect to stick with the team that drew 1-1 at Derby in midweek, with Luke Berry and Will Mannion nearing returns but not quite ready to go just yet.

Prediction

Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom will be ruing that his team allowed a two-goal lead to slip at Hull on Tuesday and there looks a strong chance that North End will be frustrated by Charlton again on Saturday.

A 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth is the only defeat the Lancastrians have suffered in the league so far this season, which is excellent news for a team who stayed in the Championship with just a point to spare last season, and they have won their last four second-tier games against Charlton, as well as knocking them out of last season’s FA Cup.

However, the midweek point at the MKM Stadium was the third draw the Lilywhites have posted in their last four games and Heckingbottom’s outfit may once again have to be content with a share of the spoils against the Addicks.

A strong defence has been the foundation for Nathan Jones’ side and they have shown after winning the League One playoffs that they are not a pushover on the road, securing a win at Sheffield United and decent draws at Bristol City and Derby.

With a backline that has conceded in just four of their last 11 games, this one could be tight, so another stalemate appeals.
