  • Hull City have won only one game in the Championship this season

  • Southampton are without a league win since the opening day of the season

  • Recommended bet: Southampton to win

Hull City's draw with Swansea City last weekend stopped the rot, with the Tigers having lost 4-2 to Bristol City and 3-0 to Blackburn Rovers in recent weeks.

However, with just one win in five games, the Humberside club currently occupy 20th place in the Championship.

Southampton are just a point better off in 13th place, with their inability to get over the finishing line harming them of late, Saints having drawn three times in the league.

Team news

City head coach Sergej Jakirovic will be without Eliot Matazo until December, while Nathan Tinsdale is not expected to return until next month at the earliest.

Matt Crooks, Semi Ajayi and Harry Vaughan are also expected to miss the match, although Liam Millar could make his long-awaited return this weekend following an ACL injury.

For Saints, Brazilian defender Welington is out for a few months, but otherwise boss Will Still has practically a full squad to choose from.

The stats

The last time these two clubs met was during the 2023/24 campaign and they each recorded a 2-1 away victory in the Championship.

Prior to that season, the clubs' previous clashes came between 2013 and 2017 in the top-flight.

Southampton lost just once against the Tigers across that period in the Premier League and, with seven wins from 10 matches since 2011, they clearly hold the upper hand in the head-to-head.

The home side have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season against Coventry, conceding 14 goals in all competitions since then.

Considering Saints are one of the favourites to win the Championship, it has not been the start to the season that many anticipated.

Their opening day win against Wrexham was only sealed via a last-gasp winner and they have failed to win a Championship match since.

Still's team have only scored six times in the league so far but, with players such as Cameron Archer, Ryan Fraser, Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz at his disposal, it surely will not be long before the floodgates open.

Prediction

Given how both teams have begun the 2025/26 season, this game could be closer than many would have thought a few weeks ago.

Hull scored a 97th-minute equaliser courtesy of John Egan to snatch a share of the spoils against Swansea last weekend.

Saints, on the other hand, battled to a drab goalless draw against rivals Portsmouth in what was their first competitive meeting between the teams for six years.

Once Still manages to get his philosophy across to the players, Saints could go on a winning run that propels them up the table.

Hull will be confident of taking the game to their opponents this weekend, but Southampton are overdue a Championship win and it should come at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.
