Birmingham vs Oxford predictions: Buoyant Blues can keep on scoring

  • Both teams have scored in each of Birmingham’s last four fixtures

  • Oxford have scored in their last seven Championship away games

  • Recommended bet: Both teams to score

Big-spending Birmingham are off to a strong start, taking four points from two Championship fixtures and they will be targeting a victory over out-of-sorts Oxford in front of an expectant home crowd.

Chris Davies’s side have recruited aggressively with the intention of pushing for back-to-back promotions and they are among the early front runners after drawing 1-1 at home to Ipswich and winning 2-1 at Blackburn.

However, Birmingham are getting used to a higher standard of opponent and can take nothing for granted against Oxford, who are building towards establishing themselves as a second tier club.

Oxford surpassed outside expectations last season by finishing out of the drop zone, but they face an ongoing challenge to compete at this level and are under pressure after losses at home to Portsmouth (0-1) and away to Hull (2-3).

Team news

Striker Marvin Ducksch is working his way back to fitness and may have to wait a little longer for his Birmingham debut.

However, plentiful attacking options include Scotland international forward Lyndon Dykes, who came off the bench to score the winning goal in last Saturday’s victory at Blackburn.

The visitors have no fresh injury concerns but they are depleted by the absences of Ciaron Brown, Przemyslaw Placheta, Luke Harris and Ole Romeny.

The stats

Birmingham have scored in each of their last eight matches.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last 26 home league fixtures.

Five of Birmingham’s last seven home games have featured at least three goals.

Oxford have lost just one of their last four away league fixtures.

The U’s have conceded the first goal in five of their last six league matches.

Prediction

Birmingham won the League One title with the help of a well drilled defence, but they have gone four matches without keeping a clean sheet and may struggle to shut out Oxford, who are strong from set-pieces and can be a tricky team to play against.

Staying up last season was an excellent achievement for the U’s, who improved after the December appointment of wily head coach Gary Rowett.

Rowett has had two managerial spells with Birmingham and was in the Blues’ dugout when they were relegated from the Championship in May 2024.

However, he has a reputation as a decent second tier manager and will not be panicking despite Oxford’s slow start to the season.

Oxford face a tough challenge this weekend, but they have scored in their last seven away games and can keep that run going.
