Luis Enrique will hope that PSG's title defence begins with a win at home to Atalanta.
  • PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0 in last season’s Champions League final

  • Atalanta got their first win of the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over Lecce

  • Recommended bet: PSG to win to nil

Paris Saint-Germain lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club's history after an emphatic 5-0 final win over Inter Milan last May and will be confident of going the distance again this time around.

Atalanta are the opposition for their opening fixture on Wednesday and they travel to the French capital on the back of a big win after drawing their first two Serie A games.

Team news

PSG could be without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the Georgia international limped off half an hour into Sunday's Ligue 1 victory over Lens.

Lucas Beraldo and Kang-In Lee also picked up knocks in the game and had to be replaced.

Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue each picked up injuries for France during the World Cup qualifying win over Ukraine and the former faces around five weeks out, while the latter is set to be sidelined for a further three weeks.

Atalanta will be without centre-forward Gianluca Scamacca, who missed the win over Leece with a knee problem and is not expected back until late September.

Midfielder Ederson also faces two more weeks on the sidelines.

The stats

This will be only the second meeting between PSG and Atalanta. The first game was won 2-1 by the French side in a single game quarter-final tie back in the 2019/20 season.

Only one of the last 11 meetings between PSG and a Serie A side has been won by the Italians and that was AC Milan, who claimed a 2-1 victory in November 2023.

Current La Dea boss Ivan Juric has never managed in the Champions League before and will make his bow in Paris.

The Croatian's only experience as a coach in major European competition came with Roma in last season's Europa League, as he oversaw one win, two draws and a defeat.

Only one of the last 30 holders of the Champions League have lost their opening match in the following campaign (W19 D10), with Liverpool losing away to Napoli during the 2019/20 season.

PSG manager Luis Enrique has won 64.5% of his games in the Champions League, with this the highest win percentage of any individual who has overseen more than 50 matches.

Prediction

PSG are without a number of key attacking players and, while they may not dominate, the French side should still have enough quality in reserve to start the Champions League campaign with a victory.

Atalanta could only draw with Parma and newly-promoted Pisa, but will take great confidence from beating Lecce 4-1 ahead of the trip to France.

However, with Scamacca missing, the Italians are without their usual focal point and may have to change tack.

Enrique boasts a supreme record in Europe and will expect his team to beat Atalanta. Having already kept three clean sheets this season, PSG did concede three goals at Toulouse, though two of those were scored with the European champions already 6-1 up.

Home advantage puts PSG in the driving seat and, though Atalanta are a tricky customer, it is Les Parisiens who should take all three points.
