Rodri signs new City deal

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has signed a three-year contract extension with the Premier League champions.

Rodri, 26, has won five titles in his three seasons at the Etihad and was also part of the City side which reached the Champions League final in 2021.

The Spaniard has committed to stay with the Citizens until 2027 and is delighted to secure his future under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage.

Rodri said: "Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career.

"I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the club and the manager pushes me every single day.

"I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help. They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work.

"We have been very successful since I came here, which is something that makes me very proud. But to be honest, that success has made me even more hungry. Once you start winning big titles, you don’t want to stop.

"City, I feel, offers me the best chance of winning trophies and that’s why I am so pleased to be staying here for longer."

Spain aiming for 'historic' victory

Spain coach Jorge Vilda is hoping to mastermind a victory against Germany

Spain coach Jorge Vilda is plotting a historic win for his country in tonight’s Women’s Euro 2022 Group B encounter against Germany.

La Roja are heavily favoured to make it all the way to the Wembley final on July 31 but have been rocked by injuries to all-time top scorer Jennifer Hermoso and Ballon d’Or holder Alexia Putellas.

Vilda’s side have never beaten the eight-time European champions but are confident of recording a statement victory at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Vilda, 41, said: "We have never beaten them before.

"I have been here since 2015 and we always set the objective to do things we have not been able to do, to play and beat the best teams.

"We will give everything, leave our soul out there to win for the first time."

Spain fell behind in the first minute of their tournament opener against Finland before easing to a 4-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Germany delivered a convincing 4-0 win against Euro 2017 finalists Denmark to top the group.

And Vilda is well aware of the challenges they will face against Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s outfit.

He added: "We know their players perfectly. They are quick on the wings and we have to neutralise that.

"Historically they have high self-esteem because of everything they have done and that has been seen here.

"We have to be at our best in dominating possession, in positioning, in creating chances, and then have a bit of luck in front of goal. The details will decide it.

"Winning would, of course, be an injection of adrenalin, motivation and morale, for sure. It would be historic."

Former Manchester United winger Nani has joined A-League outfit Melbourne Victory.

Nani, 35, ended last term with Serie A side Venezia but cut ties with the club following their relegation to the second tier.

The Portuguese international has signed a two-year contract with Tony Popovic’s men and is eager to get started.

He said: "I’m excited to be coming to the A-League with Melbourne Victory and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

"I have spoken with the coach, Tony, and I know that Melbourne Victory is a club that wants to achieve success and I want to play a role in helping the team achieve that.

"From what I have seen, the fans in Melbourne are not only the best in the league but they rival the atmosphere in Europe and I’m looking forward to being a part of that on the field in a Victory shirt and playing for them this season."

Wolves have completed their first signing of the summer transfer window with the acquisition of Irish defender Nathan Collins.

Collins, 21, made 19 league appearances for Burnley last term but was unable to prevent the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship.

The six-cap international has signed a five-year deal at Molineux for a reported £20.5million.

Wolves' technical director Scott Sellars said: "We’ve looked at Nathan for a while and admired him, so we’re delighted to bring him to the football club.

"He’s a very talented young man — he’s only 21, has played international football and had a good season last year with Burnley.

"We think we’ve signed a player with a lot of potential, as well as being a very good footballer now."

Conte happy with summer signings

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has spoken about his pleasure in already securing five summer transfers.

Clement Lenglet, Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic have all been added to Conte’s squad as the North Londoners attempt to mount a Premier League title bid next term.

And the Italian coach, 52, is content with the club’s business.

He said: "We signed five players and when the ideas are very clear it’s more simple to go into the transfer window and sign the players.

"Our plan was very clear about the positions and the roles in which we needed to improve and we did it.

"I think last season to finish in the top four was a great achievement for us all but I think we have just started.

"We need time and patience, but it will be important to be stronger than the past. I have ambition and it is the same for the club."

Spurs begin their pre-season schedule against Team K League in Seoul on Wednesday, with South Korean star Heung-Min Son expected to feature in front of his devoted fans.

On his No7, Conte added: "We are talking about a world-class player. I think maybe many people underrated him.

"Sonny can play in any team in the world. I’m very lucky to have him in my team.

"For sure we are talking about a world-class player, one of the best in the world."
