Salford’s six-game winning run in Sky Bet League Two came to an abrupt end as a resolute Fleetwood secured a 2-0 win at the Peninsula Stadium.

A quickfire early double from Ronan Coughlan and Brendan Wiredu put Fleetwood in the driving seat, with the Lancashire side going onto seal their first away win since October.

Salford had gone over nine hours without conceding in the league but their goal was breached after just 65 seconds as they failed to clear their lines from a free-kick and Coughlan pounced to put Fleetwood ahead.

The visitors netted from another set-piece on 11 minutes when captain Wiredu met Phoenix Patterson’s corner to head the visitors into a 2-0 lead.

Fleetwood looked the more likely to score as the first half continued, with Wiredu denied a second by Liam Shepherd’s goal-line clearance before James Bolton’s header was saved by Matty Young.

Salford finished the game with 10 men as Kylian Kouassi received his second yellow card in the closing stages after an off-the-ball altercation with Rhys Bennett.
