Denmark Women and Sweden Women kick off their Euro 2025 campaigns with a Nordic derby in Group C at Stade de Geneve on Friday evening.

Both teams harbour ambitions of progressing from a tough group that also features Germany and Poland.

Sweden are unbeaten in 2025 and come into the clash on the back of a 2-0 warm-up win against Norway.

The Danes have not played since they suffered a 6-1 Nations League defeat to Sweden last month.

Team news

Magdalena Eriksson could be a big miss for Sweden Women

Denmark coach Andree Jeglertz is likely to make a couple of changes to the side that was thrashed 6-1 in Solna the last time these two sides met.

Cornelia Kramer could form a three-pronged attack alongside Signe Brunn and Pernille Harder, with Roma’s Sanne Troelsgaard recalled to play with Maja Bay Ostergaard and Katrine Veje in defence.

Emma Snerle, Josefine Hasbo, Sara Holmgaard and Janni Thomsen look set to continue as Denmark’s midfield quartet.

As for Sweden, coach Peter Gerhardsson could be without the services of Fridolina Rolfo.

The Barcelona forward has not been able to train with the team during the first two training sessions in Switzerland because of the ligament damage in her foot that she sustained in the Nations League match with Denmark a month ago.

Centre-back Magdalena Eriksson has dropped out of some training sessions due to muscle overload and may also be missing for Friday’s clash.

Hanna Lundkvist, Nathalie Bjorn, Linda Sembrant and Jonna Andersson look set to start in defence ahead of Jennifer Falk in goal.

Filippa Angeldahl and Hanna Bennison could occupy a double pivot in midfield with

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Kosovare Asllani and Madelen Janogy supporting Stina Blackstenius in attack.

The stats

Sweden are unbeaten in 2025, winning four and drawing three of their last seven matches.

Sweden have won six of the last nine meetings between these nations, with three wins for Denmark and no draws.

Denmark have scored in each of their last three games against Sweden but have conceded eight times in that span.

Sweden have reached at least the semi-finals in six of the last eight Women’s Euros, while Denmark exited at the group stage in 2022.

Since joining Bayern Munich ahead of the 2023-24 season, only Nicole Anyomi (25) has scored more goals in the Women’s Bundesliga star Harder (23).

Prediction

Sweden should win this match with a full-strength side, but the doubts concerning striker Rolfo and defender Eriksson are enough to make you think twice, especially in the first game of a group stage when nobody wants to lose.

Denmark would probably accept a draw given they have been beaten twice recently by their neighbours and will still be raw from the 6-1 loss in Solna last month.

Their best chance of taking something from this game is probably to focus on defending well and trying to catch Sweden on the break.

The Danes have some exciting forwards who could do some damage if given space, so Sweden will probably have to keep their full-backs in check to cover.

It may result in a stale game with few scoring chances and fewer than three goals scored.

Sweden’s opening game at the last Euros finished 1-1 and they needed a stoppage-time winner to clinch a 2-1 win in their first group game at the last World Cup.

Denmark’s last six tournament matches have fallen under the 2.5-goal mark and this one has all the ingredients for another tight contest.
