South Africa have an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against England after contrasting victories at Headingley and Lord's.

The Proteas bowled out England for just 131 on their way to a seven-wicket win in Leeds but Thursday's second ODI at Lord's went down to the wire.

South Africa closed out a five-run victory, defending a target of 331, and Harry Brook's England are hoping to avoid a 3-0 series defeat at the Rose Bowl on Sunday.

Team news

England have made one change to their team from Lord's with all-rounder Jamie Overton replacing fast bowler Saqib Mahmood.

They will again be reliant on spinners Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, who conceded 112 runs in their combined 10 overs on Thursday.

South Africa batsman Tony de Zorzi (hamstring) is sidelined.

Fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Kwena Maphaka are hoping for an opportunity after sitting out the first two games.

The stats

  • England have suffered 21 defeats in 31 ODIs since the start of the 2023 World Cup

  • Ben Duckett has passed 20 in only one of his last 10 white-ball innings

  • England have hit more sixes than their opponents in each of their last four ODIs at the Rose Bowl

  • South Africa had opening stands of 121 and 73 in the first two matches of this series

  • The Proteas have won six of their last seven ODIs against England

  • Matthew Breetzke has scored 150, 83, 57, 88 and 85 in his first five one-dayers

Prediction

Harry Brook made a fine start to life as England's white-ball captain, overseeing 3-0 ODI and T20 series victories against the West Indies earlier this summer.

After a gruelling Test series against India, however, Brook's men have struggled against South Africa, who are eyeing up a 3-0 clean sweep at the Rose Bowl.

England's batting capitulated in the first game at Headingley and their lack of bowling depth was exposed at Lord's on Thursday.

South Africa were wobbling a little at 93-3 but Matthew Breetzke (85), Tristan Stubbs (58) and Dewald Brevis (42 off 20 balls) powered them to a competitive total of 330-8.

The Proteas' middle-order then targeted England spinners Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, whose lack of discipline undermined Adil Rashid's terrific spell of 2-33 from 10 overs.

Brook and coach Brendon McCullum have chosen not to tweak the balance of the side, so Bethell, Jacks and Joe Root will have to bowl 10 overs between them in the third ODI.

Breetzke's 85 at Lord's followed scores of 150, 83, 57 and 88 in his first four ODIs, making him the first batsman in history to start their 50-over international career with five successive half-centuries.

He loves batting in England, racking up 863 runs in 24 T20 Blast matches for Northamptonshire in 2024 and 2025, and a runs line of 28.5 looks too low for a player who is on top of his game.
