- Sheffield Wednesday have won only two of their last seven away games

Burnley to win to nil

Burnley have gone 1,000 minutes without conceding a goal in the Championship and their impressive defence can lead the way to a victory over Sheffield Wednesday to boost their promotion hopes.

The Clarets have allowed only nine goals in 33 Championship matches and last conceded a league goal in a 2-1 win over Watford on December 21.

Goalkeeper James Trafford is incredibly well protected by his defence and midfield and has had to deal with only 21 shots on target since then.

The Clarets have not scored enough goals to convert clean sheets into victories as they would have liked, with five wins and six goalless draws in their current goal-free streak, and they have drawn 14 of their 33 league matches.

With top two Leeds and Sheffield United putting more wins on the board, Burnley head into the weekend programme five points outside the automatic promotion positions despite their historic defensive run.

Wednesday are still in the play-off hunt in ninth place and are not afraid to go on the road, with seven of their 12 league wins having come in away games.

The Owls have actually scored more away goals (20) than Burnley have managed at home (18), but they have won only two of their last nine games and their confidence will have taken another hit when Coventry scored a last-minute winner in a 2-1 victory at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Team news

Burnley's Josh Brownhill made a substitute appearance against Preston on his return from injury and is in contention to start against Wednesday.

Jordan Beyer, Mike Tresor and Aaron Ramsey are long-term absentees but a late decision will be made on Luca Koleosho's availability.

Anthony Musaba has a chance to be back in the Wednesday squad after injury, while Barry Bannan will be assessed after making a surprise early return to the line-up against Coventry.

Di'Shon Bernard, Dominic Iorfa and Akin Famewo are still out.

The stats

- Burnley have kept 24 clean sheets in 33 league matches

- Wednesday have won just two of their last nine games

- Burnley's last six games have all had under 2.5 goals

- Sheffield Wednesday have scored in each of their last six games

- The Owls have not won any of the teams' last seven league meetings

Prediction

Sheffield Wednesday have struggled on the road in recent months
Sheffield Wednesday have struggled on the road in recent months

Burnley went goal crazy by their standards in the first match between these teams this season, winning 2-0 at Hillsborough in October, and they are worthy of support to register another win with a clean sheet.

Wednesday have not beaten a top-half team since a victory over 12th-placed Norwich in November, so an away win over the clean-sheet machine at Burnley is hard to envisage.

The Clarets would no doubt love to pick up three points on Friday to put some pressure on the top two before their weekend fixtures and a third successive home win to nil looks within their capabilities.

Wednesday have lost all four of their matches against the top three teams so far this season, failing to score in any of them, and they will have far better opportunities to pick up points than this tough test.
