Australia vs British & Irish Lions: Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Team News

The 2025 Test Series kicks off on Saturday, July 19th, when the British and Irish Lions face Australia at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
After a strong build-up to the first test, it is set to be a cracker with an in-form Lions side facing a Wallabies side still looking for a boost in their confidence.
Build Up to the Tour
British and Irish Lions
After an early setback against Argentina in Dublin, the Lions made light work of the Australian Super Rugby Pacific teams in the build-up to the test. They won all of their matches on Australian soil, with the latest result a victory over the Brumbies 36-24, with tries from Ollie Chessum, James Lowe, Marcus Smith, Garry Ringrose, and Josh van der Flier.
Australia
Australia's build-up has been limited, just scraping past Fiji over two weeks ago. However, the stats are on their side, having won the last 10 matches against Tier 1 opposition since last year. Coached by three-time Six Nations winner Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies are heading into their home series as underdogs, currently sitting in sixth place in the world rankings.
Australia v British & Irish Lions Match Preview
One of the toughest tests so far for the British and Irish Lions sees them take on two-time world champions Australia. Coached by former England player and current Ireland boss Andy Farrell, they are looking to become just the second Lions side to win the three-match series. This would be the first team to do so since 2013.
They come up against an Australia side struggling for form after being knocked out in the pool stage of the World Cup in 2023 for the first time in their history. They also finished last in each of the two Rugby Championships. The Wallabies are playing not only for themselves, but also for the country and the sport.
Team News & Line Up Predictions
With the team for the first test set to be confirmed on Thursday, the latest news is that flanker Tom Curry is set to start in the back row, while Wales’ sole representative in the squad is set to miss out despite some outstanding performances.
This would mean for the first time since 1896, Wales do not have a representative in a Test match. Owen Farrell could also miss out
It is understood Sione Tuipulotu will start inside centre, with Finn Russell and Huw Jones, creating an all-Scottish midfield. Ireland's Tadhg Beirne and Ollie Chessum are competing to join Curry and Irishman Jack Conan in the back row.
