Chelsea made history by completing the Women’s Super League season undefeated as the champions beat Liverpool 1-0 with a late goal from Aggie Beever-Jones at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had wrapped up the title with two games to spare and were given a guard of honour by Liverpool as they walked out ahead of kick-off.

Despite having plenty of the ball, Sonia Bompastor’s side, showing nine changes to the starting XI, were frustrated by solid Liverpool defending.

However, the champions’ relentless pressure eventually forced a breakthrough in added time when Beever-Jones broke into the area and fired in at the near post to cap a memorable unbeaten WSL campaign through 22 matches.

Chelsea, who also won the League Cup, will be aiming to complete a domestic treble when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

The Blues started brightly, with academy graduate Beever-Jones making an early run behind the Liverpool back-line onto Keira Walsh’s pass, but Reds goalkeeper Rachael Laws was out quickly to collect.

Chelsea continued to press, with Sjoeke Nusken playing a low ball in from the left which flew across the face of goal, but none of her team-mates were able to get a touch in the six-yard box.

Liverpool soaked up plenty of pressure but remained compact in midfield and difficult to break down.

Beever-Jones laid the ball off at the edge of the penalty area to Wieke Kaptein, but her low strike lacked enough power to test Laws, who made a comfortable save.

In a rare moment of action at the other end, Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton raced out of her area to clear as Olivia Smith looked to latch onto a long ball.

Hampton was then left scrambling backwards as a clipped 20-yard effort from Marie Hobinger dropped just over the crossbar after the Liverpool midfielder had got the better of Blues captain Millie Bright.

Chelsea almost broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when Sandy Baltimore did well down the left before playing a low ball through the six-yard box, where Kaptein’s back-heel dropped just past the far post.

Bompastor made a couple of changes for the start of the second half, with Erin Cuthbert and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd coming on to replace Kaptein and Nathalie Bjorn.

The home side created an early chance when Baltimore played Beever-Jones down the right, with the forward cutting back to send her shot just wide of the far post.

Baltimore then fired a low strike narrowly off target from the edge of the Liverpool box.

It looked to be one of those frustrating afternoons for Chelsea as the clock ticked into added time before Beever-Jones latched onto Ashley Lawrence’s pass following another swift counter-attack to rifle the ball inside the near post.
