Key Factors Affecting The Open Championship

Changes since 2019

Royal Portrush hosted the Open Championship back in 2019, and since then, the course has been updated. We have taken a look at what some of the changes are heading into the tournament below:

  • The length of the Par 71 course has been extended by 44 yards since 2019, to 7,381 yards.

  • A new championship tee has been introduced on the 4th Hole.

  • The front left portion of the green on the 1st Hole (Hughies) has been adjusted to allow for a pin position.

  • The green complex on the 7th Hole (Curran Point) was rebuilt to soften the contours.

Weather Forecast

At a course where the weather can play havoc, the forecast is hugely impactful approaching the event. Portrush is known for being a difficult course to play at due to the strong winds.

If the turf is soft and the wind is down, then this is a scoreable course where mid-to-high teens will be the target required. If the Northern Irish weather is unkind, then a repeat of 2019 may be on the cards.
